In simple terms, the main difference is buoyancy.
A popup is basically a floating bait, which (as its name suggests) ‘pops-up’ off the bottom.
A wafter on the other hand is a bait which is designed to have neutral buoyancy, so it sinks - but only just!
Because the Fjuka Hookable Pop-ups and Wafters can be direct hooked or divided into smaller baits, they have even more applications than the harder alternatives on the market.
How to use Pop-Ups
Watch any underwater video (and there are hundreds out there on YouTube) and you’ll soon realise that most fish spend 99% of the time swimming just off the bottom. By fishing with a weight on the bottom, and a long hooklength, you can ‘pop-up’ your bait midwater, right where the fish want to be.
This is particularly advantageous in Winter, when the fish are less active, and the water separates into what are known as ‘Thermoclines.’ These are basically bands of water of different temperatures, and generally the warmest water is somewhere in the middle of the water column. In very cold weather - you will often find that this is where the majority of the fish spend most of their time. So if you fish a popup into one of these thermoclines, you will often get bites when all others around you fail to catch.
Another key advantage of pop-ups comes when you are fishing on venues where the bottom is particularly silty, or full of debris. This can cause all kinds of problems if you’re fishing with a sinking bait, as the bait can sink into the silt, or debris on the bottom can hide the hook point. A pop-up bait rises above all that (excuse the pun) and gives you perfect hook presentation in imperfect conditions.
Experienced anglers also use the pop-up to create a cocktail bait, like the famous’ Snowman’ rig. This is basically a combination of a pop-up, and a sinking bait, which sees the hookbait sit up off the bottom, giving it very obvious visual appeal to fish, and meaning that it can be sucked in very easily, as the bait as a whole is neutrally buoyant.

How to use Wafters
Wafters have found massive popularity among feeder anglers, and it’s easy to see why. Watch a carp feed and you will see it hover above the bottom, then suck the bait up into its mouth. Because a Hookable Wafter is so light in water, it flies straight in, and you catch him. This is particularly deadly when fishing with the Method or pellet feeder, but the same principle works when fishing single baits on the bomb too.
